Background, Geographic Area and Location:Feni was a sub-division of former Noakhali zila. It was up-graded to a zila on the first March, 1984. The present area of the zila was once under marshy land meaning Feni. The continuous silting process made it possible for human habitation as a result of which people far and near called the area as Feni. The zila is bounded on the north by Comilla zila and India, on the east by India and Chittagong zila, on the south by Chittagong and Noakhali zilas and on the west by Noakhali zila. It lies between 22º44 ́ and 23º17 ́ north latitudes and between 91º15 ́ and 91º35 ́ east longitudes. The total area of the zila is 990.36sq. km of which 80.94 sq. km. is under forest.Temperature and Rainfall: Annual average temperature -maximum 34.3°C, minimum 14.4°Candrainfall 3302 mm.Main Rivers:FENI, Little Feni and MUHURI.Administration:Feni zilawas established in 1984. Feni town has an area of 7.43 sq km. The zila consists of 6 upazilas, 43 unions, 552 mauzas, 571 villages, 5 paurashavas, 54 wards and 83 mahallas. The Upazilas are CHHAGALNAIYA, DAGANBHUIYAN, FENI SADAR, PARSHURAM,FULGAZIand SONAGAZI.Archaeological Heritage and Relics: Mohammad Ali Chowdhury Mosque (built 700 years ago), Chandgazi Mosque (built 400 years ago) and Feni Government College Building (1822 AD), Bijoy Singh Dighi at Mohipal (1760). Mineral Resources:Feni Gas Field.Main Crops:Paddy, wheat, potato, pulses, sugarcane.Main Fruits:Mango, jackfruit, coconut.Traditional Transport:Palanquin (extinct), bullock cart (nearly extinct) and boat. Census Administration:For census operation, Feni zila was divided into 1 census zila, 22 zones, 365 supervisors’ area (SAs) and 2386 Enumeration Areas (EAs). The large mauzas/villages were divided into two or more enumeration areas and small mauzas/villages were merged to form an enumeration area consisting of about 120 households, keeping in view the terrain and habitation pattern of the locality.Source: Banglapedia andBBS
